These are instructions on what to do after you had an extraction.
The main goal is to get the bleeding to stop
- Apply pressure: Place gauze pad over the extraction site or sites and bite down for 20-30 minutes. Repeat if necessary until the bleeding has stopped.
- Avoid rinsing or spitting: This will dislodge the clot and prevent the bleeding from stopping.
- Skip the straws: Straws can create suction that dislodges the clot.
Take over the counter pain medication or any medication that was prescribed to manage pain.
The next day, after the bleeding has stopped
- Start rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater (½ teaspoon salt in 8 ounces water) 2-3 times a day after the first 24 hours.
- Brush your remaining teeth with a soft-bristled brush, carefully avoiding the extraction site.
- Avoid touching or poking the extraction site with your tongue, fingers, or any objects. This can irritate the healing tissues.
